If you think school exhibitions are just posters on boards, this one will completely change your mind. Yesterday, I came across something quite unexpected at IDRISSI International School in Bukit Jelutong, an immersive exhibition called “Silk Road Secrets: Trade, Trails, and Treasures.” And honestly, it didn’t feel like a school event at all. It felt more like stepping into a live, functioning marketplace, one that travelled across continents.
The entire campus was transformed into a Silk Road journey, stretching from China and India all the way to Central Asia, the Middle East, and even Europe. We’re talking about countries like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, to the Middle Eastern civilisations of Yemen, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and onward to Nepal, Pakistan, Mongolia and Turkiye, before reaching the European centres of Greece, Italy and Andalusian Spain — each represented through thoughtfully designed booths that looked like mini cultural hubs.
But what stood out the most? The students weren’t just presenting. They were running the show.
Each booth functioned like a small business. Students took on roles as traders, storytellers, and even entrepreneurs. You don’t just walk around and read — you interact. Visitors are given coupons, which you’ll use to “trade” with the students. And yes, they will pitch to you. Confidently. How cute!
It’s quite impressive seeing how naturally they explain historical context, cultural significance, and even product origins, all without sounding like they memorised a script. It feels real. Almost like you’re negotiating in an actual bazaar somewhere along the Silk Road.
According to Puan Malina Sapawi, Head of School of IDRISSI International School Bukit Jelutong, the event reflects the school’s move away from rote memorisation towards more meaningful, hands-on learning.
Another detail I really appreciated: about 80% of the materials used were recycled. You’ll notice how creative the setups are, from props to decorations, all cleverly upcycled. It adds another layer to the experience — not just history and business, but also sustainability.
And then there’s the atmosphere.
Students dressed in traditional attire, cultural performances happening around the space. It really pulls everything together. You don’t just see history but you feel it. There’s a certain energy when learning becomes this interactive.
What’s interesting is how this reflects a bigger shift in education. Instead of focusing purely on textbooks and exams, this kind of approach builds real-world skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork. Things that usually take years to develop.
One of the students mentioned something that stuck with me: they didn’t just learn about history, they experienced it. And you can tell. If this is what “future-ready education” looks like, I’d say we’re heading in a pretty exciting direction.
